Our visit to Greg Inch's and neighbour Tom!
All 95 middle division pupils from Rooms 5,6,&7 were lucky enough to have Shannon's Dad Greg Inch organise a trip to his Earth Moving business to see the large machines he uses in his job. Also we were fortunate enough to get to visit his neighbour Tom to see two full scale replica aeroplanes.
This was such a FABULOUS interesting trip as our topic is all about how things move, the children were entranced in the big machines and Greg explained the way they worked in kid like language. The children got to see diggers in action, a gear box, big trucks, loaders and bull dozer's. They had some great questions to ask and found that Greg answered some of their wonderings they had had in the classroom on the previous day.
Tom showed us his two aeroplanes and talked to us about how the wings worked, and told us some history of aeroplanes in combat in World War 1. The children were animated and enthralled by his wonderful stories of aviation in World War 1. He also answered questions about the different parts of the aeroplane that the children had wondered about.
This was a wonderful trip and well worth it as part of our Tuning In part of our Inquiry.
Thank you so much Greg, Susan, Joe, Tom and Jeanette you were super duper! Also thank you to the parent help.
Room 6 leave a comment about what you enjoyed the most.

Then we walk back to my house. My Dad had all the machines out to show everyone. It was cool to let kids from my class see what my Dad does. It was a cool day Thanks Dad and Tom

I really liked seeing the digger work. I liked seeing the Aeroplane.
At the end we got a turn on the truck and digger, it was very cool.
On Friday we went to Greg and Tom's houses, I liked looking at the planes because they were World War 1 fighting planes.
I liked looking at the truck gearbox because it had 12 gears just for going forwards, I had never seen inside a gearbox before. He showed us how the hydraulics work on the Tip decks and Diggers. It was really cool when he sat in the Digger and spun it around really really fast!!
Thanks Greg and Tom,

It was a fun morning walking to Tom and Greg's house learning about how aeroplane wings worked and diggers.
I really liked hearing what they used in World War 1. Tom said they used rocks and sticks and then it got worse and they used guns and bullets and all that.
I learnt that the wind pulls the aeroplane wings up and the black thing on the wing is so he can tell how fast he is going. I also learnt how diggers work, they have this metal bar that goes up and down.
I liked it so much I wish we could do it again. Maybe we might! I am looking forward to the next time we do, I hope my gum boots don't rub on my legs again.
I hope everbody else had a nice time and I hope Greg and Tom enjoyed us.

I liked going to Toms and learning about the war planes. I was amazed that Tom built them himself - he is so clever.
I was shocked that they had guns on their planes. I learned that a propellar helps control the planes direction.
At Gregs i learned about hydraulics and it lifts the arm of the digger. I liked seeing Greg. He is a friend of my family.
When we went on the trip, I liked it when I saw the guns on the airplanes. I liked seeing the earthworms and there was a really big one, 1/2 cm thick. I liked to see the German war plane because it had a double span wing. I liked it when Tom said they used machine guns in World War 2.
I liked it when Greg showed us the digger and he just moved his hands like his hands were the digger. I liked it when I got to see the air pump make the thing go flying up and if Joe used oil, it would have made a really big mess everywhere. I liked seeing the big gear box and I think it weighed 2 or 5 ton.
I liked it when my Mum sang the name game song with everyone's names. Jane Jane Bo Bane, Banana Fanana Fo Fane, Me My Mo Mane, Jaannneee!
Children,
You had a great trip to the Inches place. Greg did a tremendous job showing you the machinery. It certainly sounds like a cool day.

I engoyed going to see the aeroplanes at Tom's place. He told us about the war in the olden days when they used only sticks and stones, then they used bow and arrows and later aeroplanes with guns on them. He explained to us how the wings work on the planes. After our visit at Tom's place we walked onto Shannon's dad's place. When we got there he showed us all his trucks and explained to us how the motor works. We got to see how a digger operates. The whole trip was very interesting and a big thank you to everyone that helped.

It was a sunny day and we enjoyed the walk over to Tom's place to see his two home built aeroplane's.
Tom told us that he had flown one of the planes 2 times around NZ, and he is not sure if the other one is going to fly because he designed that one himself.
Then we went over to Shannon Inches house to see all of her dads machines. I liked seeing the inside of a real gear box from a truck. I got to sit inside a digger and the truck. Shannon's dad told us a funny storey about a builder who dropped his cell phone down a deep hole where Shannon's dad had been working in the digger, and the builder was annoyed that his phone kept ringing and he kept running back and forward because Shannon's dad kept calling him.
Thank you Tom and Greg that was a fun day

It was fun seeing how machines worked and what they looked like. The digger looked pretty amazing when Greg hopped into it and moved it all around. The aeroplanes looked really cool. i can't believe that in the war they had guns on their aeroplanes. It was cool that Tom made the aeroplanes by himself. Thanks Tom and Greg.
