Shanae's Chicks!!

We were lucky enough to have Shanae's Mum bring in her chicks. There were 5 of them and one is named Goldie because she is gold and she is the runt of them all, the rest of them are yet to be named.

We loved having them visit and they were really fluffy and cute. Shanae tells us that they are starting to get their adult feathers now. They are living on Shanae's property with some doves in a cage.

Shanae puts food up there after school, they just feed all day. They eat wet bread, baby chicken food and they drink water.

Thank you for the opportunity to hold chickens!

Our Egg Experiments!

Experiment #1: Why Doesn't A Mother Bird Break Her Eggs?

We managed to put 18 dictionaries on top of 6 egg shells, a lot of us in our hypothesis thought that this would be impossible but we have since found out it isn't!
Conclusion: The arc-like shape of the egg helps support the weight of the dictionaries. The shape of the egg is the reason it doesn’t break when a bird sits on it.

Experiment # 2: Can you Make An Egg Bounce?

We loved doing this and found out that you can!! Once again a lot of us thought that this was not possible.
Conclusion: The vinegar removes the shell but leaves the membrane or skin. The water stretches the membrane which is thick and can be shown to students. This allows the egg to “bounce.”

Our Discovery Days with Room 7!

On Tuesday and Wednesday Room 7 and 14 had some Discovery time. We had a choice of lots of activities and we have listed them below for you to see. We got to choose what we wanted to do and we had an activity checklist to fill in as we went. We made a comment and rated ourselves (1-5) against the key competency of self management (we had to make sure we got on with the task at hand and we had to complete 6 activities over the 2 days) on these checklists.

This was so much fun as you can see on our faces in the slide show above.

1. Make your own magnets
2. Make puppets with coloured paper and ice block sticks
3. Stuffed animals, mammals and reptiles
4. Stick things bug craft
5. Oobleck
6. Scientific experiments
7. Magnetix
8. Lap-tops
9. Robotics kits
10. Board games/puzzles

Room 14 - leave a comment and tell me what your favourite one was and why!

Can you Make an egg bounce?

We asked ourselves the question, “Can you make an egg bounce?”

Hypothesis: (guess) We made a guess and discussed what we thought would happen.

Day 1: First we put an egg in a glass (not boiled). Then we covered it in vinegar (someof us added food colouring to this).

Day 2: Empty the vinegar and put fresh vinegar in.

Day 3: Touch the egg. How does it feel? Don't empty the vinegar.

Day 4: Empty vinegar and put fresh vinegar in.

Day 5: Don't empty the vinegar.

Day 6: Empty the vinegar and put fresh vinegar in.

Day 7: Tip out the egg out of the glass. Has it got a shell? What has it got around it?

It made the bounce when you dropped it instead of breaking. Remember to bounce it just a little because it is just the skin that is holding it.

Conclusion: The vinegar removes the shell but leaves the membrane or skin. The water stretches the membrane which is thick and can be shown to students. This allows the egg to “bounce.”

WE LOVED doing this so much so that we are going to continue to do

some more egg experiments. Stay tuned for more!

Today we started making Digital Citizen posters in the computer lab using comic life, this is the first time for most of us on this program so we had lots to learn! We are putting a photo of ourselves on them and speech bubbles explaining how we are digital citizens and how important it is to not share any of your personal details on line such as full name, address, e-mail and telephone number. We are going to finish these and put these on our blog - stay tuned:-)

We watched a cyber safety clip on hectors world which is a Cyber Safety site for us to go on. Have a look at it at home and investigate it, it is lots of fun you might even want to show your Mum or Dad a episode!

Treasures that we have shared!

Malaysian Students!

We had Malaysian students last week at school, there were 32 of them around different classes in our school. They were here from their university in Malaysia to learn about teaching here in New Zealand.

They were wonderful in our classroom and taught us about Malaysia and many of their customs. They also taught us songs and some traditional Malaysian dances. We had heaps of fun with them and asked them lots of questions over the 3 days that they were with us:-)

My favorite mammal is a baby panda bear, it needs to live where the bamboo trees grow for food and shelter it likes a warm place to live. the trees have to be tall so the pandas can climb them to be safe. Cate

Important things that a mammal must have? food and water, they are warm-blooded, fur or hair, glands that give milk.
My favourite mammal is the monkey because they have cute little faces.

My favourite mammal is a kitten, it needs to be in a loving home with a nice warm bed when outside. It also needs water, milk and cat food. I like tabby coloured kittens. They are cute and cuddly and very playful.
