Today as part of our 'who are our neighbours' inquiry, we started making 'I AM' pictures a la Nigel Brown, a New Zealand artist. We chose 3-4 kiwi icons that represented New Zealand for us and 2 other icons that represented us as a person.
February 2006
The paintings of Nigel Brown represent the good kiwi icon. Indeed, the images are full of icons - gumboots, black tee shirts, McCahon-like "I AM" text and fence posts. Here is an example of his work.
I chose the Buzzy Bee, Kiwi, Silver Fern, and the Southern Alps for my kiwi icons and I represented myself with 2 koru joined together which portray my family, waves and culture. I also drew a flower because it has many personal references for me.
When I get a chance to snap some photos I will post some fabulous Room 6 art work here to show you our finished product!
Children in Room 6 might like to comment on what they did!

Tayler said we began by getting a black piece of paper and drawing an outline of the words I AM.
Caitlin said we then got to choose two colours to paint the I AM. We only used two colours to make it more affective so it would stand out better.
Abbey said we then drew the mountains behind the words and tissue papered them.
All together we then said we painted over the tissue paper once it was dry we could then draw our kiwi icons on it and pastel them. After that we shaded the background of our picture with pastel and then we put colour flow around the words I AM. Our pictures are looking really cool.

I think New Zealand is special because there are some kiwis, tomatoe sauce, hokey pokey ice cream and silver ferns. I drew kiwis and buzzy bees in my I AM picture because New Zealand only has kiwis, other countries don't. I drew trains because I like trains alot and they represent me. I really like my picture and I feel proud of it!
I liked making my I AM poster, and the koru's looked beautiful in pink. I painted kiwi's and silver fern's. Because i am very proud to be a New Zealand Kid.
