Umu at Fairfield!

On Friday the 17th of August we enjoyed a delicious Umu as the culmination of our Inquiry unit 'Who are our neighbours'.

The day started off with a staff breakfast and the Yr 8 children arriving very early for school to help with the putting down of the Umu.

The day was a great success with children, parents and staff enjoying a delicious lunch and then entertained with cultural performances in the afternoon. It was truly a memorable experience for all. A special thanks to Mr Mac and Miss Tofia who went above and beyond the call of duty to make the day a success!

Stay tuned for reports posted by our Room 6 Purple People Eaters!

This is a big thank you to all the teachers and those involved in cultural week at Fairfield School. The children have been given such a fabulous look into another wonderful culture. This is such an important thing for our children to learn and respect how others live. It gives an insight, knowledge and acceptance that they will always carry with them. Both Zach & Madison have spent all weekend talking about it. Thanks again.

I also liked that it was a special day for the school and the class.

I was so excited to have the umu of friday. We have learnt a lot about Samoa and I wanted to see an umu where they cook the food above the ground instead of an oven!
I was so sad because on Friday morning I woke up with a sor red throat and mum said, sorry you have to stay home or the other kids will get your bugs. I was really upset but i love looking at the photos and I think rom 6 had a cool time.

On Friday the 17th of August we had an Umu at school. We watched it getting cooked and the year 7's and 8's helped. Some of the teachers helped too and they had to be at school at 4am. I didn't really like the taste of some of it but I liked the chicken. After lunch we went into the hall and watched Otago Girls High do a dance for us, then we watched 2 girls dance on stage. My favourite thing was watching the fire dance where he threw the fire stick in the air and caught it then he put the fire in his mouth. It was really exciting. After this we watched 3 girls dancing to special Samoan drumbs. The girls went and picked some school children and they did some dances with them, it was fun to watch. Some of the teahers got up and danced with the people and they were FANTASTIC. It was a really fun afternoon at school.

I enjoyed the Umu we had. The food was really tasty, I had chicken, potatoes and carrot - I liked the chicken best. It is interesting to see customs from different countries that we haven't been to. It is important to try other peoples customs and learn new things.

I really liked the fire dance in the hall. It must take a lot of practice to get it right and not burn yourself.

I had a really lovely day thet Friday, and got an autograph on my arm from one of the All Blacks.

Thank you to everyone who worked hard to give us all such a good time.
