The dolphin is one of the most playful and intelligent animals on our planet. Even though dolphins spend their lives in the water, they are not fish, but are mammals. Dolphins can't breathe water like fish, but need to come to the surface to breath air. There are many kinds of dolphins. Perhaps the most famous are the Bottlenose Dolphin and the Killer Whale (that's right the Orca, or Killer Whale, is a member of the dolphin family).
How do dolphins live?
Dolphins are very social animals. Many dolphins travel in groups called pods. Some dolphins, like Killer Whales, live in pods of 5-30 members for their entire lives. Each Pod behaves differently. Some pods migrate and travel around the world, while others have a specific territory. Sometimes pods can group together to make giant pods as large as 1000 or more dolphins. Baby dolphins are called calves. The males are called bulls and the females are called cows.
How big do they get?
The largest dolphin is the Killer Whale which grows up to 23 feet long and can weight over 4 tons. The smallest dolphin is the Heaviside's Dolphin which grows to just over 3 feet long and weighs around 90 pounds. Dolphins have long snouts that typically hold around 100 teeth. They also have a blowhole on the top of their head that they use for breathing.
What do dolphins eat?
For the most part, dolphins eat other smaller fish, but they are not limited to just fish. They eat squid, too, and some dolphins, like Killer Whales, will often eat small sea mammals like seals and penguins. Dolphins often hunt together, herding fish into packed groups or into inlets where they can be easily caught. Some dolphins will share their food with the young or let the young catch injured prey as practice. They don't chew their food, they swallow it whole. Dolphins get the water they need from the animals they eat, rather than drinking ocean water.
Fun Facts About Dolphins
- Dolphins are part of the same animal order, Cetacea, as whales.
- Many dolphins are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The Hector's dolphin is classified as endangered.
- They are intelligent enough to understand complex commands.
- Like all mammals, dolphins give birth to live young and nurse them with milk.
- River dolphins live in fresh water, rather than salt water.

Dolphins are sea mammals that live in groups called Pods. The Dolphins are called the same way as cattle, males are called bulls, females are cows and the babies are called calves. Dolphins have holes on the top of their heads to breath out of. They are called blow holes. Dolphins eat fish and squid, but the Orca will eat penguins and seals as well. Dolphins work together to catch their food. The Orca can grow up to 23 feet long and can weigh up to 4 tons. EW
Dolphins are very fast swimmers to catch their prey, they like eating fish. They search for food and then they eye up their prey to eat. They usually swim in groups these are called pods. They use sound waves to communicate with each other. The killer whale is one of the dolphins group members. Sometimes dolphins save humans from sharks. You can sometimes see them if you are on a boat.

The Hectors dolphin is my favourite dolphin:
- Hectors dolphin is named after Sir James Hector who worked at Wellington museum
- The hectors dolphin is the smallest and rarest dolphin.
- A New Zealand survey estimated there are only 55 adults left
- An adult Hectors dolphin is 1.2-1.6m long and
weighs 40-60kg
- They are easily caught in fishing nets and this is partly why there aren't many Hectors dolphins left

The killer whale is actually a member of the dolphin family. They are not fish they have to come to the surface for air using there blowhole .They don't chew their food they swallow it whole. A baby dolphin is called a calf,a mum is called a cow and dad a bull. They swim around together in pods.NB
In the article I learnt that dolphins are playful and very smart. I found out that the Orca (killer whale) is part of the dolphin family. My favourite fact was that dolphins get the water they need from the animls they eat, rather than drinking ocean water.

- Orca or killer whales are my favourite dolphin.
- They are the largest members of the dolphin family and can live for a very long time. Scientists think that the oldest known Orca, called Granny, is 103 years old! Her pod lives in the waters near British Columbia.
- Orca are very social animals, they like to hunt together and they will share what they catch. - New Zealand Orca like to eat stingrays, and they are the only Orca in the world known to hunt and kill stingrays for food, which makes them very special.

Dolphins are mammals they are not fish. They swim in groups called pods. all of the pods behave differently. Some Dolphins swim around the world and others stay where they are. Sometimes the dolphins group their pods together so they have about 1000 dolphins all in 1 pod.

dolphins belong to the same family as whales. Dolphins have blowhole. Killer whales eat penguins. The killer whales are the biggest dolphins. why do they eat penguins? it is not nice.
I've always wondered how sea animals got the water they need now i know how - they get it from the food they eat.cb
My favorite sea creature is an orca and it is in the dolphin family. It is also the biggest dolphin. Dolphins don't drink sea water, they get enough water from the food they eat.
